All things.......RUGBY ! |
I remember J D Robbins with fondness as he "got me" into rugby. My first year in the Upper School found me playing with the also-rans, but one day Robbin walked past, stopped to watch and the next thing I knew I was promoted straight onto the Under14s team and this kicked off started my schoolboy rugby career which eventually took me to the final of the Lancashire Schoolboy trials, I was the only person from a Liverpool area school selected, the rest coming from the Rugby League hotbeds of St Helens and Wigan. I remember Ray French featuring prominently in the trials and he went on to play for England at I think both Union and League. He then became the BBC voice of Rugby League
John Robbins played for Birkenhead Park when at the College and then for Bradford when he went to Yorkshire. I did see him play for Bradford against Liverpool at Aigburth.
I also remember seeing him chase Miss Friar the Art teacher up the teachers' stairs in one Lower School lunch break. He caught her with much giggling and fortunately they did not see me watching.!.
